SUM Net members Parisar and Centre for Environment Education organised a workshop to discuss the draft rules of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. The State Government is required to prepare the Rules for implementation of the Act. In addition to the Rules, the State Government is also required to frame a Scheme for Street Vendors (“Second Schedule”) after due consultations with the local authority and the Town Vending Committee.
About 38 participants from Ratnagiri,Mumbai, Parbhani, Pune attended the workshop and included:
• Hawker groups/representatives
• Academics involved in the issues related to street vendors, informal sector and governance
• Architects engaged with this issue and involved in street design exercises
• NGOs and advocacy groups promoting sustainable transportation
To understand the draft rules made by the State Government better, a simplified version was prepared for the participants to give their feedback on.
